Educación Plus in the UK is a charity which is set up to promote and support the ministry of the same name in Costa Rica.
Educación Plus in Costa Rica is a non-profit Christian ministry that has worked with children and young people and their families in deprived urban areas (shanty towns) for over thirty years. There’s a high risk of these youngsters becoming involved in violence and crime (as perpetrators and/or victims), especially as related to drug abuse and trafficking. Education is a vital key to access the few opportunities that do exist to overcome this generally negative start in life. One of our major aims is to combat the school desertion that too often subsequently leads to involvement in crime in order to survive.

We try to demonstrate God’s love in a practical way that touches every part of their lives – spiritual, educational, family, recreation, relationships, etc. This holistic approach follows Jesus’ teaching and example, and is validated by our weekly Bible clubs that are age appropriate and applied in their teaching. The whole ministry is "Bible based" and every week, and during the annual camps, there are also lively meetings where the youngsters learn about Jesus and Christian values.
Educación Plus UK financially supports the ministry of Educación Plus Costa Rica in many ways. These include school uniforms and equipment at the start of the academic year each February; the cost of the three annual camps (two in January and one in August); Christmas celebrations; and the stipend of our International Director, Juan Carlos Ramírez. Grants for specific needs of children and their families are considered as and when they arise, which illustrates how we are a flexible people-centred ministry rather than a fixed project-centred operation.
Many children and families need a lot of support with many and varied complex issues. This requires a lot of "boots on the ground" and we count on a large group of volunteers, most of whom grew up with Educación Plus. It's now wonderful to see them involved in the work, but funds are needed to pay their expenses. With a few hundred kids on the books you can see that there is a lot to do. But what a difference it can make!
